| Resumo: | The author has examined the spinal cord and peripheral nerve in five cases of maculo-anaesthetic leprosy, as also macules (nine times) from six cases of the same from of leprosy. As the spinal cord, a slight amount of degeneration of the posterior columns was always found. In the cervical region, the degeneration involved the central part of the tracts of Burdach and Goll (Figs, 5-7), but in the lower and the thoracic portions of the cord, the tract of Goll was alone affected (Figs. 5, 6, 8, 9). There was no degeneration in the lumbar region In Case I there was no degeneration below the lower part of the cervical region (Figs. 2. 3). There was a deficiency in the fibres about the borders of the posterior roots Cases II and III (Figs. 4, 7, 8). In Figs. 8 and 9, a small zone unaffected by degenerative changes is seen to either side of the posterior septum in the columns of Goll. Inflammatory changes were never found. The degenerative atrophy chiefly involved the sheathes of the nerve fibres only whereas but few of the axis-cylinders had disappeared in Cases II and III only. There were no degenerative changes in the grey matter, and nowhere were hollow spaces and excavations observed. The ganglion-cells were scarcely at all diminished in number, but some presented signs of degeneration (AU).
